Professional
I have been a licensed psychologist in the state of New York since 2008. My professional training and set of clinical experiences would probably be considered wide-ranging by our field's standards, and I have enjoyed providing supervision to clinicians-in-training over the years, as it has without question pushed me to be a better clinician and academic thinker in our field. I continue to contribute to academia through professional writings and presentations in my areas of expertise.
Personal
I was raised in northern Maine, but I don't like lobster and am pretty bad at downhill skiing - go figure. My first real paycheck came from picking potatoes at 13 years old, and I think my willingness to work hard and relate to others as equals has some strong roots there. But I prefer to return only in the summer, as my childhood gave me more than my share of below-zero weather. I currently live in Tarrytown with my wife, Joanna (also a psychologist - apologies to our kids), our two kids, Noah and Ella, and our dog, Charlie.
Technically speaking, the majority of my psychotherapeutic training has been cognitive-behavioral or behavioral in focus, and I am a
DBT-Linehan Board of Certification, Certified Clinician™ in Dialectical Behavior Therapy. More broadly, however, how I go about working to facilitate therapeutic change is very relational and "functional" in the sense that I believe it's my job to meet everyone where they are and do what works to be effective, rather than expecting clients to adjust to my style. Though I didn't always know it along the way, I realize now that that my deepest professional passion has always been for helping individuals who feel chronically misunderstood to have a different experience under my care. Throughout these experiences has been a thread of interpersonal investment and exploring the aspects of all my clients that makes them them. My accumulated professional experiences tell me that once someone feels seen in this way without judgment and with belief in their capacity to make necessary changes, then they in turn become more capable of doing so.
